ṛg-yajuḥ-sāmātharvākhyā vedāś catvāra uddhṛtāḥ itihāsa-purāṇaṁ ca pañcamo veda ucyate
Synonyms
ṛg-yajuḥ-sāma-atharva-ākhyāḥ—the four names of the Vedas; vedāḥ—made into separate parts; catvāraḥ—historical records (Mahabharat); uddhṛtāḥ—and the puranas; itihāsa—the fifth; purāṇam ca—the original source of knowledge; pañcamaḥ—is said.
Translation
The four divisions of the original sources of knowledge the Vedas were separately made. But the historical facts and authentic stories mentioned in the Puranas are called the fifth Veda.
