srotobhiḥ saptabhir yā vai svardhunī saptadhā vyadhāt saptānāṁ prītaye nānā sapta-srotaḥ pracakṣate
Synonyms
srotobhiḥ—by currents; saptabhiḥ—by seven (divisions); yā—the river; vai—certainly; svardhunī—the sacred Gnages; saptadhā—seven branches; vyadhāt—created. Saptanam—of the seven; saptānām—for satisfaction of; prītaye—various; nānā—seven sources; sapta-srotaḥ—known by the name.
Translation
The place is called as 'Saptasrota' on account of the water of the sacred Ganges river being furcated in the seven divisions of currents which was done for the satisfaction of the seven great Rishis.
