nimittāny atyariṣṭāni kāle tv anugate nṛṇām lobhādy-adharma-prakṛtiṁ dṛṣṭvovācānujaṁ nṛpaḥ

Synonyms

nimittānicauses; ativery serious; ariṣṭāniinauspicities; kālein course of time; tubut; anugatepassing away, nrinam—of the humanity at large; nṛṇāmgreed etc; lobhādiirreligious Prakritim—habits; adharmahaving observed; prakṛtimsaid; dṛṣṭvāyounger brother.

Translation

In course of time it has come to happen that people in general have become accustomed to greed, anger, pride etc and Maharaj Yudhisthir having observed all these serious inauspicities adressed his younger brothers and said.

Purport

A pious king like Maharaj Yudhisthir at once became perturbed in mind when there was such inhumanly symptoms as greed, anger, irreligiosities hypocrisy rampant in the society. And it appears from this statemant that all the abovementioned symptoms of degraded society were unknown to the people of the time and it became astonishing for them to have experienced them with the advent of the Kali Yuga or the age of quarrel.
